ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainable business design is aimed at addressing the ecological and human health impacts resulting from a footprint laid down by generations of business and government leaders. We are at a point in history where there is near consensus on the magnitude of the problem, but the best approach for moving forward is far from well understood.
Conventional wisdom treats the challenge as a series of tradeoff decisions; for example, a tax is imposed on production to curb emissions, which comes at the expense of economic performance. However, a new paradigm is emerging where organizations are treating the issue as an opportunity, looking at changing consumer preference and improving technology as a source of competitive advantage.
The fact remains that with any major economic, social and political upheaval, some organizations will prosper and others will decay. Some are in a greater position to ride the wave of change. In the case of environmental sustainability, for those organizations that are heavily invested in old style technologies or business models, this evolution will be a real test of courage, adaptability, capability and foresight.
